Lot 84 chestnut colt Zoustar – Ready To Soar (More Than Ready) (draft: Segenhoe Stud)

Having won six of his nine starts, including two Group Ones and a Group Two, Zoustar became one of the most sought after stallions in Australia, following the premature demise of his sire Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago) who had been Champion First Season Sire, as too was Zoustar.

Zoustar was sold to stud for $14 million in the week leading up to his victory in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) at Flemington, which provided jockey Jim Cassidy with his 100th Group One win. Cassidy claimed Zoustar to be “a better three-year-old than Redoute’s Choice and more brilliant than Pierro”.

“We rated him the best Zoustar colt in the sale,” said David Ellis.

“He’s got great physical presence, beautifully balanced, very well muscled, great neck and girth for a young colt, an amazing attitude, and from one of the best stakes producing farms in Australia.

“He looks every bit a racehorse and has the physique that would make for a great stallion.”

“It was very spirited bidding and there was plenty of demand for him, but we were determined and got the winning bid,” Ellis added.

The colt is the first foal from a sprinting mare that won three times to 1200 metres, and carries a Danzig cross through his dam lines.

His grand-dam Wedgetail Eagle (Lure) was an incredible producer, with 12 individual winners of 50 races – a rarity – including Group One, Two, & Three winner Eagle Way (More Than Ready), stakes winner Assertive Eagle (Danewin), multiple stakes placed Impressive Eagle (Rubiton), and stakes winner Soaressa (Twining).

Segenhoe Stud general manager Peter O’Brien said: “We breed at least a dozen Zoustar’s per year and sold about 50 in the past five, and for me he is equal best of those.

“He’s a lovely, neat, precocious colt, from a family we know well. We have his mother and grandmother, and he looks a dead set two-year-old type.

“Mentally, he’s bomb proof, has a terrific mind and has perfect balance. We lunge horses as part of their yearling prep and he’s got the most beautiful action.

“The under bidders were Gai Waterhouse, James Harron, and Henry Field, so all the best judges wanted him in the auction and we’re delighted that David Ellis won out.

“We know he’ll get every chance in the world at Te Akau. We’ve very excited.

She’s a young mare, with her first foal going to one of the best trainers in the world and one of the best operations.

“I know David (Ellis) loved him and had every right to love him that much.”
