The benchmark in racehorse ownership

At Te Akau, we are committed to developing every horse with skill and expertise. We accept privately owned horses to train and we also purchase yearlings on spec. at sales that anyone can be involved with! In fact David Ellis was independently assessed as the world's most successful buyer of yearlings (2021 - 2024) that have gone on to win black type races. While our focus is bringing out the very best in every horse, we ensure our owners always feel welcome and part of our team, enjoying world class communication - in fact, we are renowned for that! With a proud record of proven winners, year after year we deliver results built on genuine care for our horses and our people. FAQs

What is a syndicate?

You buy a share in a horse and race it with a small group of fellow owners. It's fun, affordable, and every owner receives the full, personalised experience – updates, stable visits by appointment, raceday privileges, owners' days and much more.

Who manages and trains my horse?

Your horse will be trained by Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson, Te Akau’s Champion Trainers, and managed by Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM, a licensed NZTR Syndicator. You’re in the best possible hands. More about the team

How do I buy a share?

Easy! Just contact us or browse our Yearlings & Shares page We’ll walk you through your options based on your budget and goals - providing as much information as you need, including disclosure statements approved by our governing bodies.

When I buy a share/into a syndicate what does it include?

When you get involved with Te Akau, you know that your horse will be given every opportunity to maximise its potential as an equine athlete. We are committed to bringing out the very best in all of our horses. You will really feel part of the tangerine team and be warmly welcomed. You also receive:

  • The acknowledgement of ownership and care for an incredible animal - horse-welfare is an absolute priority for us.
  • Love of the sport.
  • New friendships and camaraderie with like-minded people.
  • Opportunities to plan trips, travel and have fun - including annual Te Akau owners' events.
  • The prospect of winning - adrenalin - some people say it's the 'best sensation known'.
  • Amazing, world-class communication every step of the way about your horse's progress and plans

Do you take a cut of prize money?

No – Te Akau pays out 100% of owners’ prize money each month. NZTR deducts standard trainer (10%) and jockey (5%) fees, along with any nomination and acceptance fees. Te Akau does not charge promoter's fees, syndicator's fees, nor any monthly management fees.

What about horse welfare?

Respect for the thoroughbred in racing and also retirement has always been a top priority at Te Akau. While many fillies and mares are destined for breeding, some of them together with geldings, are found new homes in trekking, showing, dressage, hunting, eventing, polo, show jumping or simply enjoying life / hacking around the farm. Their safety and well being always comes first.

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing has also documented a vision (under the Rules of Racing) for thoroughbred welfare and understands the importance of the issue internationally, forming their protocol after attending the International Forum for Aftercare of Racehorses (IFAR) and launching a joint venture with Equestrian Sport New Zealand (ESNZ) called Thoroughbreds in Equestrian Sport (TiES). It also has an association with the NZ Show Horse Council and sponsors the Off the Track Horse Show Series.

Te Akau fully supports and complies with all aspects of horse well-being, going well above and beyond in our care for our equines at all stages of their careers. We believe in 'loving life after Racing'!

What colours will my horse race in?

The iconic Te Akau tangerine, royal blue stars & striped sleeves, tangerine cap coloured silks - we have been told our colours are stunning as they are easily recognised - they stand out and compliment the colour of horses. They are also known as "the lucky colours".

Where do Te Akau horses race?

We have runners across New Zealand, both in the North & South Islands, and with our new state-of-the-art facility recently completed at Cranbourne in Victoria, Australia, we also offer our owners the chance to experience racing trans-Tasman as well. We have a strong focus on the Melbourne & Sydney carnivals in particular. Te Akau can also claim past winners in UK and Ireland so we really have a global reach.
