Description

Lot 37 bay colt Snitzel – Toffee Tongue (Tavistock) - draft: Bhima Thoroughbreds

To race in Australia from our Cranbourne stable - this colt is by Champion Sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), and the second foal out of Australasian Oaks (Gr. 1, 2000m) winner Toffee Tongue, from the family of Hong Kong Derby winner and HK Horse of the Year Werther (Tavistock).

By four-time Champion Sire in Australia, and four-time Champion Two-Year-Old, Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) is one of three in the trilogy of breed shaping champion stallions in Australia, along with Danehill (Danzig), and Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), and stands at Arrowfield Stud for $247,500 + GST.

Toffee Tongue was purchased for $500,000 as a yearling at Karaka, and rose to great heights when winning the ultimate level over 2000 metres.

Although going into the Australasian Oaks (Gr. 1, 2000m) as a Maiden, having been runner-up in her three prior starts to 2400m, Toffee Tongue was given a brilliant winning ride by Kerrin McEvoy.

She then franked the form as a four-year-old when winning the Sky High Stakes (Gr. 3, 2000m) at Rosehill.

The Tavistock (Montjeu) / Zabeel (Sir Tristram) cross that produced Toffee Tongue has proved somewhat of genetic magic, none more so than producing Hong Kong Horse of the Year Werther, and VRC Derby (Gr. 1, 2500m) winner, now stallion, Tarzino (ex. Zarzino).

Tavistock, dual Group One winner and noted sire of (seven) international Derby winners, including Werther, added terrific quality to New Zealand stallion ranks, producing robust and hardy horses with tough qualities with the ability to accelerate (quicken) at the business end, a trait for which he was heralded as a racehorse.

Grand-dam of the colt, Bagalollies (Zabeel), dual New Zealand Broodmare of the Year, is the dam of four individual winners (28 wins), including 10 Group victories.

Te Akau principal David Ellis said: "He’s a beautifully neat type of colt, very forward and strong.

"He reminded us a lot of Sword Of State, a Snitzel colt we bought here at the Gold Coast Sale in 2020, and he went on to win a Group One as a two-year-old. He now stands at Cambridge Stud, and his first yearlings are being sold at this sale.

"This colt looks the type could be a Sires’ Produce Stakes horse as a two-year-old, while he really does have the dam side pedigree to get over more ground and keep improving at three, four, and older.

"He paraded beautifully and a very collected type of colt."

The colt is from the same draft, Bhima Thoroughbreds, that Ellis purchased Imperatriz (I Am Invincible) in 2020 at the Gold Coast. The winner of 10 Group One races, Imperatriz is the current New Zealand Horse of the Year and Champion Sprinter in Australia. Retired and sold in June last year for $6.6 million, she became the highest priced filly or mare ever sold in the Southern Hemisphere.
