Karaka Yearling Sales 2025
Lot 272 bay filly Sword Of State – Savoia (Charge Forward - draft: Wentwood Grange
The filly is from the first crop of Sword Of State (Snitzel), whose first offerings sold for $380,000, $375,000, & $340,000, earlier in January at the Magic Millions Yearling Sales on the Gold Coast. Sword Of State was represented by six colts and two fillies.
Six of his progenies sold, while two were passed in, with prices up to $380,000, off a $15,000 + GST service fee, and $240,800 average.
Sword Of State was purchased by David Ellis CNZM as a yearling on the Gold Coast.
He won won four of five starts, including the Sistema Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m), before being named Champion Two-Year-Old, and now stands at Cambridge Stud, where his first foals drew high praise.
“By four-time Champion Sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), Sword Of State had an enormous amount of ability right from the outset and proved a worthy Champion Two-Year-Old.
Savoia is the dam of Starvoia (Starcraft), impressive stakes winning sprinter, whose first foal was Group One winner Skew Wiff (Savabeel).
Bred and owned by Waikato Stud, Skew Wiff is trained by Te Akau and the Tarzino Trophy (Gr. 1, 1400m) winner, who also won a Group Two on Melbourne Cup Day last season at Flemington, continues to race at the forefront in Group One races in New Zealand.
The family also draws depth from grand-dam Dowry (Bahhare), a South Australian Oaks (Gr. 1, 2500m) winner and Top 3YO in Free Handicaps in New Zealand.
In turn, Dowry has left four individual winners of eight races.
“It’s a family we know very well and one that we know can leave talented racehorses,” said David Ellis.
“We’ve inspected all the first crop yearlings by Sword Of State, on the Gold Coast and at Karaka, and this filly has a great walk and prepared by a great farm at Wentwood Grange.
“Sword Of State was one of the most readymade two-year-old colts we’ve ever purchased and his progeny are certainly resembling his physical attributes.
“The filly has inherited the strength attributes of Sword Of State, and really is a lovely style of filly.
“We’ve really couldn’t wait to see his progeny, like others we’re really impressed, and we’re excited to be buying them.”
