Tom Murphy

Racing Manager (New Zealand)

Originally from County Kildare, Ireland, Tom Murphy brings extensive international experience across racing, breeding, bloodstock sales and young-horse development to his role as Te Akau Racing Manager in New Zealand.

Tom grew up immersed in the thoroughbred industry on his family’s farm, where his parents broke in and pre-trained young horses while also preparing a small team of racehorses. He began working professionally with horses at 17 and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Economics from the National University of Ireland Galway. He is also a graduate of the Irish National Stud Thoroughbred Breeding Management Course.

His international experience includes working at the Darley Japan Pre-Training Centre, riding work for Tom Clover Racing in the United Kingdom and serving as Assistant Foreperson for John O’Donoghue Racing in Ireland. Tom also held Yearling Manager positions with Tinnakill House Stud in Ireland and Sledmere Stud in Australia, overseeing the preparation of yearlings for major sales including Magic Millions, Inglis Classic and Inglis Easter.

Since joining Te Akau, Tom has become an integral member of the team. Before his August 2026 appointment, he served as Foreman of the Te Akau Colt Barn, overseeing its daily operation and working closely with trainers, veterinarians and other professionals across horse management and development. A highlight of that period was strapping Seize The Day when the colt won the Group 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes in March 2026.

In August 2026, Tom was appointed Racing Manager in New Zealand. His passion for racing and bloodstock, together with his international experience and practical horsemanship, supports his work with Te Akau’s owners, trainers and wider team throughout the operation.
