Reece Trumper

Assistant Trainer (New Zealand)

Reece Trumper has long been identified as one of New Zealand’s rising talents in thoroughbred racing and is Assistant Trainer for Te Akau Racing in New Zealand.

His journey began in Stratford, where he grew up immersed in horses through his grandparents, John and Sue Trumper of Cheveley Stud in Te Aroha. The stud stood leading stallions and produced Group 1 winners including Gee I Jane, Pakaraka Star and Bulginbaah, giving Reece a strong grounding in both racing and breeding from an early age.

Reece joined Te Akau in 2018 and has progressed through the organisation by proving himself across a range of stable and racing roles. He began as a stablehand and raceday strapper, later becoming Assistant Stable Foreman at the Colt Barn. In 2022, he was appointed Racing Manager, where his understanding of the operation and clear communication with owners helped keep racing plans and day-to-day activity running smoothly.

In May 2025, Reece stepped into the role of Assistant Trainer for Te Akau Racing in New Zealand. He works closely with Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson across horse management, preparation and the wider New Zealand operation. During the 2025/26 season, he took on greater responsibility as Te Akau secured its seventh consecutive New Zealand Trainers’ Premiership. Sam has acknowledged Reece as a major support in his role as Assistant Trainer.

A natural horseman who is personable, respected and energetic, Reece brings leadership, practical experience and a deep knowledge of the thoroughbred to Te Akau’s senior team. His progression reflects both his work ethic and Te Akau’s commitment to developing talented young racing professionals.
