Lot 93 chestnut gelding Churchill – Diamond Earth (Choisir) $160,000 (draft: Ascot Farm)
By first season sire Churchill, standing at Coolmore Stud, whose sire Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) produced more group one wins than any stallion in thoroughbred history and holds the record (five) of Epsom Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m) winners.
Irish bred Churchill was rated best Two-Year-Old Colt in Europe (2016), and won seven of 13 starts, including four Group 1 wins to a mile (1609m) with the remaining three: Group 2, 3, and Listed.
Dam Diamond Earth was a Group 3 and Listed winner to 1200 metres in Australia, by Australian Champion Two-Year-Old and history making racehorse Choisir (Danehill Dance). Winner of the Lightning Stakes (Gr. 1, 1000m) at Flemington, Choisir beat the best sprinters in the world when winning the King’s Stand Stakes (Gr. 2, 1000m) and Golden Jubilee Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) at Royal Ascot in the U.K., before becoming highly successful at stud. A noted sire of sires, Choisir daughters have already left over 20 stakes winners.
“He’s a really athletic horse, light on his feet, and already gelded,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis.
“His dam showed ability to win twice as a two-year-old, five wins in total, and both the second and third dams were also two-year-old winners.
“We’ve been keeping an eye on the stallion, whose progeny are doing really well in the Northern Hemisphere, and tried to buy one by him at Karaka, but she made too much money and since trialled well.
“Generally, we like to give horses we’ve bought at Ready to Run Sales a bit of time to let down and relax, and he is a type to go from strength to strength.”
