Lot 243 brown colt Heroic Valour – Maputo Express (Lonhro) – Raheen Stud

We are over the moon to have purchased this physically impressive Heroic Valour colt – especially as we trained his Group 1 winning sire and his progeny are absolutely making an impact!

Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM purchased Heroic Valour (Fastnet Rock) as a yearling at Karaka, and known for his consistency at the very top level, he was rewarded with victory in Diamond Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie.

He competed in stakes’ races in 16 of 19 starts, winning four, being runner-up seven times, and fifth or better 18 times. He had the sort of reliability that has seen him make a grand beginning to his stallion career in Australia, currently third Leading First Season Sire. Heroic Valour is the only Group 1 winning two-year-old son of Fastnet Rock at stud in Australia.

He was unbeaten as a 2YO and when he won the Group 1 Sistema Stakes at Ellerslie he became Fastnet Rock’s first ever Group 1 winning two year old anywhere in the world.

“There is a lot of talk by trainers about the progeny of Heroic Valour and they’ve got them going very well,” Ellis said. “And the trainers themselves are putting mares to him, which is a very good sign.

“I liked him (Heroic Valour) enormously when buying him as a yearling and bought him for our breeding syndicate. He was very professional, had a sensational temperament, as well as a beautifully relaxed demeanour and we rated him one of the best Fastnet Rock (Danehill) colts in the sale.”

Heroic Valour is a half-brother to Triple Honour (Honours List), who won three times as a two-year-old, as good a horse in anyone’s language, and he culminated his career winning the Doncaster Handicap (Gr. 1, 1600m) at Randwick. Their dam Myrrh (Nassipour) left nine individual winners of 32 races.

Their dam-sire Nassipour has always been regarded as a great stallion and famous for siring the terrific race mare Let’s Elope, who was very impressive winning the Melbourne Cup for trainer Bart Cummings.

The dam of this colt, Maputo Express, is by Lonhro ‘the black flash’. Lonhro (Octagonal) was Champion Three-Year-Old, Champion Miler, Horse of the Year, and simply an outstanding Australian racehorse that won 11 Group 1 races. His progeny is highly sought after, and he is the sire of over 170 stakes’ winners including 18 Group 1. Lonhro is a sire of sires and a leading broodmare sire.

Bred by the Nolan family at Raheen Stud, where Heroic Valour stands, the colt carries a Danehill cross, as sire of Fastnet Rock, and through the dam line of Maputo Express as sire of grand-dam sire Redoute’s Choice.

“I just loved his walk, his strength and physicality. He looks like he will just get up and run and he will have every chance to emulate his sire by targeting Group races as a two year old.  He certainly has the strength and early maturity to make that possible,” said Ellis.

Heroic Valour will be represented by two starters in the 2022 A$2 million Magic Millions’ 2YO Classic.
