Lot 102 bay gelding American Pharaoh – Galway (Savabeel) (draft: Kiltannon Stables)
So much to LOVE about this gelding and we know the family very well, it’s one Te Akau has enjoyed great success with!
The gelding is by American Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup winner American Pharoah (Pioneer of The Nile), Champion First & Second Crop Sire, who has produced over 500 winners: 44 stakes winners, including seven Group One.
Racing Journalist Steve Haskin said: “American Pharoah was an icon; the personification of perfection – physically, mechanically, and mentally. In short, he was the ultimate racing machine.”
Bred by Christopher Grace QSM and Susanna Grace (Surrey Farm), dam Galway (Savabeel) showed talent to win twice over 1600 metres from limited starts, and Te Akau purchased her first foal, Spirit Of Galway (Rip Van Winkle), a filly that displayed plenty of ability but really had no luck.
One of the best Maiden gallopers in the country prior to winning, having recorded two seconds, four thirds, and a fourth from eight starts, Spirit Of Galway broke through with an unbelievable performance in the Pearl Series Maiden 1400 metres at Hastings, and made it back-to-back wins in the Rating 65 1400 metres at Otaki. Unfortunately, it was her last race day start.
Galway has left three individual winners, including Spirit Of Galway, fast stakes winning sprinter Johny Johny (Charm Spirit), and Kirwan’s Lane (Charm Spirit), who recorded Group Three and Listed wins among 10 victories to 1900 metres.
His grand-dam, Trocair (Flying Spur), has left eight winners of 21 races, and Galway is a sister to dual Group One winner Shillelagh (Savabeel), Group Two winner and Group One placed Tullamore (Savabeel), stakes winner Grazia (Savabeel), stakes placed Irish Dream (Savabeel), and stakes placed Shenanigans (Ocean Park).
“He is a medium sized individual with a great action, plenty of strength, a lovely head and eye, and put it all together very well in his breeze-up,” said David Ellis.
“We know the family well, having trained Spirit Of Galway and Shillelagh, and he’s a really promising horse.”
