Lena Jones

Te Akau stables manager Lena Jones was destined for a career in the racing industry, being the daughter of a horse trainer.

The middle child of three for Wayne and Liz Jones, from Hawera, in the Taranaki, Lena was surrounded by horses from a young age.

Pony club and event riding, Lena continued her experience during yearling preps, mares and foals at Coolmore Australia, and one with Coolmore America, Kentucky, racing stables in Australia, and a position with the Racing Bureau in the New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing offices at Petone, Wellington.

“Working for Te Akau Racing is very professional and I love it,” Lena said. “It runs like clockwork even though it is a big operation and I’m learning lots from Jamie (Richards), David (Ellis), Karyn (Fenton-Ellis) and Robyn (Bregman).

Te Akau principal David Ellis said: “Lena is a young lady that has made a success of everything that she’s done. She’s extremely diligent, nothing is ever a problem, her work ethic is tremendous, and we are very fortunate to have her in the team”.
