Te Akau Tuesday Update

In the last five years or so, if there is one filly that I have regretted not buying as a yearling, that is Wolverine.

At the Gold Coast Magic Millions' Sale last week, I finally changed that and bought this filly for A$850,000.

Already she has won two Group 2 races in New Zealand.  She also ran second in the Group One Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes and was likewise runner up in the Karaka 2YO Million.

Importantly she has also been Group/Listed placed six times in Australia including in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes and Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes at Royal Randwick.  Her other stakes' placings came at metropolitan tracks in Brisbane and Canberra.

So she certainly has immense ability and is, in my view, a Group 1 winner in waiting.  There is no doubt in my mind she will prove very competitive in races such as the Group 1 Railway and Group 1 BCD Sprint and other elite races.

Wolverine is by Tivaci, out of the winning O'Reilly mare Knew It, who in turn is out of a Zabeel mare, who is out of a Centaine mare, who is out of a Vice Regal mare!

A fantastic pedigree indeed! Her family features top horses such as:

OCEAN PARK - Horse of the Year, 8 wins including the Group 1 WS Cox Plate and successful sire

CRITIC - Group 1 winner of 9 races, three other stakes' races and multiple Group/Listed placings

GRUNT - dual Group 1 Melbourne winner including Group 1 Australian Guineas and Maybe Diva Stakes

COURTZA - dual Group 1 and Group 2 winner incl. Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond Stakes - dam of super sire O'Reilly - winner of five races all at Group 1, 2 and 3 level

PRINCE KAPSTAAD - winner of 5 races including the Group 1 Easter Hcp

Just an incredible family!

My plan is to bring Wolverine home to Te Akau Stud on Thursday and spell her for a month. Then we will prepare her for Group 1 races in New Zealand and Australia, so it's a very exciting time for us.

There is now only 40% available in this stunning, proven filly - so if you are interested, give me a call now on +64 21 925 151 or email Karyn - [email protected]

The Magic Millions' Broodmare Sale was overall very strong and a filly like this, even if she never won another race would still probably be worth at least what we paid for her.

It is incredible the interest we have had in the horses we have bought. In the last six months we have purchased over 50 horses and only have shares now available in eight. I would like to thank everyone who has supported us. We are now only two months away from the start of the new season and I have never seen so many exciting horses in the stable ever before.

While I was away, I was just staggered how the grass has grown. With the official start of winter in two days' time, I have never seen so much grass.

Last Friday we scanned our five-year-old ewes and only had 11 empty. They scanned at 168% which is a great result, and today we are scanning the mixed aged ewes.

We have a big team racing at Cambridge tomorrow so best of luck to all our owners with runners.

Remember it's easy and fun to be part of the very successful Te Akau team - check out Wolverine, as well as our final yearlings - we promise you will enjoy being involved with our stable.
