Te Akau Saturday Trans Tasman Preview

Te Akau Racing 10 horses entered on Saturday 15 January: Trentham, Wingatui, and Gold Coast.

Trentham:

Weather: overcast, track: Dead5, rail: true. No rain forecast.

1:20 p.m. R2 10 Cote de Beaune  (3 g Burgundy – Lucrative) – Craig Grylls; came clear in the straight to win easily when trialling on 29 November at Matamata (won four of five trials) and produced a polished debut victory in a Maiden 1200 metres on 22 December at New Plymouth. Up in grade for the $40,000 Rating 65 1200 metres, he rates a top three chance with any luck from barrier 10. Fixed odds: $4.50 & $1.90.

1:55 p.m. R3 4 Hanalei (2 f Darci Brahma – Lucrative) – Michael McNab; had strong trial form before running the fastest last 600m (32.5) for second to stable-mate Maven Belle (Burgundy) when debuting in a Maiden 2YO 1000 metres on 3 January at Te Aroha. Year younger three-quarter sister to Cote de Beaune (above), side winkers are on and she has what it takes to prove competitive in the $60,000 IRT Wellesley Stakes (Listed, 1100m). Fixed odds: $3.20 & $1.25.

3:39 p.m. R6 5 Wairau Cove  (3 g Darci Brahma – Distinctive Lass) – Johnathan Parkes; impressed winning a trial before finishing a close fourth when debuting on Slow7 conditions in a Maiden 3YO 1100 metres on 2 December at New Plymouth. He cut loose with a five-length victory in a Maiden 3YO 1200 metres on 23 December at Matamata, and has drawn the ace in the $110,000 Life Direct Wellington Guineas (Gr. 2, 1400m). The year younger brother to stable-mate and 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) winner Kahma Lass, subsequent stakes’ winner at Caulfield, he rates a top three prospect. Fixed odds: $8.00 & $2.10.

3:39 p.m. R6 7 Shepherd’s Delight  (3 f Rip Van Winkle – Safari Sunset) – Craig Grylls; backed up a Maiden win with tremendous second to stable-mate The Perfect Pink (Savabeel) in the 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) – delivering a Te Akau first four. She was eye-catching late during exhibition an gallop with stable-mate and subsequent Railway (Gr. 1, 1200m) winner Entriviere (Tavistock) on 23 December at Matamata, but was ridden upside down when third to subsequent winner One More Time (Per Incanto) in a Rating 65 1215 metres on 28 December at Rotorua. She is ideally drawn (4) in the $110,000 Life Direct Wellington Guineas (Gr. 2, 1400m). Fixed odds: $15.00 & $3.20.

4:50 p.m. R8 5 Entriviere (5 m Tavistock – Marcey’s Belt) – Michael McNab; took exemplary form to the Sistema Railway (Gr. 1, 1200m) on 1 January at Ellerslie, and found another gear to explode clear and win. While she is yet to race at Trentham, she is an Australian Group 2 winner and raced very well in Australia. She is horse to beat, from barrier one, in the $250,000 JR & N Berkett Telegraph (Gr. 1, 1200m). Fixed odds: $1.50 & $1.10.

Waikouaiti RC at Wingatui:

Weather: fine, track: Dead5, rail: true. No rain forecast.

1:00 p.m. R3 1 Challa  (5 g Dissident – Are There Any) – Sanu Toolooa (a3); ended a three start campaign with a notable second in a Rating 74 1200 metres on 23 October at Riccarton, was then freshened, trialled, and resumed with a fourth on a Heavy10 footing in Rating 74 1200 metres on 28 December at Timaru. With weight relief to 58.5kg, he has first four claims in the $30,000 Rating 74 1200 metres if appreciative of course at his first attempt. Fixed odds: $3.30 & $1.40.

2:43 p.m. R6 4 Radegast  (5 g Savabeel – Marveen) – Courtney Barnes; got back and was short of room in a Rating 65 1400 metres on NZ Cup Day (13 Nov.) at Riccarton. He was freshened, trialled, and made up plenty for third when resuming on Heavy10 footing in a Rating 65 1200 metres on 28 December at Timaru. Contesting the $30,000 Rating 65 1400 metres, he should race well with the right trip from barrier 10 – one of two in the race for the stable. Fixed odds: $6.00 & $2.30.

2:43 p.m. R6 5 Fashion Shoot (4 m Savabeel – High Fashion) – Jason Laking; was overhauled late when sixth on Slow7 in Rating 74 1200 metres on NZ Cup Day (13 Nov.) at Riccarton. She too was freshened, trialled, and then resumed with a third on Heavy10 footing in a Rating 65 1200 metres on 28 December at Timaru. Also contesting the $30,000 Rating 65 1400 metres, she rates a top three prospect from barrier four. Fixed odds: $4.20 & $1.80.

5:08 p.m. R10 3 Zouluminous  (5 m Zoustar – Luminous Harmony) – Jason Laking; built nicely to win a Rating 74 1800 metres during Cup Week at Riccarton, was freshened, trialled, and resumed in a Rating 74 1400 metres on 30 December at Kurow, when finishing just off them. She is suited stepping up in the $35,000 Rating 74 1600 metres where she rates a top five chance in an even field. Fixed odds: $12.00 & $3.80.

Gold Coast:

Weather: fine, track: Soft5, rail: 1.5 metres 900m – 400m, remainder true. No rain forecast.

7.00 p.m. (NZ time) R7 16 Bright Blue Sky  (2 f Fastnet Rock – Blue Blue Sky) – Brett Prebble; impressed winning her debut on 20 November in the Fasttrack Insurance 2YO Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Te Rapa. Freshened, she finished third when trialling on 14 December at Rosehill, and resumed with a good fourth in the Magic Millions B J McLachlan Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) on Boxing Day at Doomben. Bought by David Ellis CNZM in January at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, she has drawn wide (16) in the A$2m The Star Magic Millions 2YO Classic (Restricted Listed, 1200 metres), where Coolangatta (Written Tycoon) is strongly supported ($2.10), but she should race well. NZ TAB fixed odds: $18.00 & $5.00.
