Te Akau NZ Taupo Preview

Te Akau New Zealand has seven horses entered for the seven-race programme on Monday August 19 at Taupo.

As at 8:32pm on Friday 16 August the conditions were: fine and Dead4, rail True.

12:56pm R1 3 Sunset Pass (5 g Yamanin Vital - Janet's Chance) - Opie Bosson; resumes from a 68-day let up after coming from well back in the field with a strong finish in tight quarters for sixth on June 12 over 2100 metres on Dead5 footing at Ruakaka. Continuing to improve with maturity, he is ideally drawn in barrier one for the Maiden 1800 metres.

1:31pm R2 2 Fast Fiction (4 g Fastnet Rock - Paperback) - Opie Bosson; freshened since finding the going too heavy at Trentham, his previous outing had resulted in a five-length debut victory on June 6 in Maiden 3YO 1100 metres at New Plymouth. He has the pace to utilize barrier one and both the strength and ability to force the issue in the Benchmark 65 1000 metres.

2:06pm R3 4 Ruthless Lady (3 f Keeper - Lady Dehere) - Kelly Myers; ended her two-year-old season with a win, second, and third, from four starts and has taken good improvement after finishing third in a recent trial at Te Teko. Competing against two of the top fillies: Bounding, and Recite, in the 3YO 1200 metres will prove a good benchmark, and her genuine attributes will be to the fore.

2:41pm R4 11 Wolfwhistle (3 c O'Reilly - Legs) - Leith Innes; resumes from a 114-day spell following a solid effort for second when trialling recently at Te Teko. He will be let find his feet in the early stages of the Maiden 1200 metres and look for him finding the line. He is a beautifully relaxed individual with a lovely action. His dam, Legs (Pins), was a winner on debut as a three-year-old over 1200 metres before going on to win five of twelve starts including the NZ Oaks (Gr. 1, 2400m) and Kelt Capital Stakes (Gr. 1, 2040m).

3:16pm R5 6 Dreamer (3 f More than Ready - Make Me Strong) - Kelly Myers; travelled comfortably as co-leader, on the rail, only to overshadowed on the line when second resuming on July 20 in the 2YO 1000 metres on Dead5 footing at Ruakaka. Over the same trip in a Maiden event, she will be ridden more quietly from a wide gate on this occasion and appears nicely placed in this field to make her presence felt.

3:51pm R6 8 Clos De Tart (4 m Darci Brahma - Rapid Kay) - Kelly Myers; has come to hand nicely to resume in the Benchmark 65 1200 metres following a 74-day let up. A winner on debut over 1200 metres on yielding ground at Te Aroha, from three starts in her first prep. Her dam, Rapid Kay, also trained by Te Akau, impressed on slow ground in a career of five victories from 1300m to 1600m. A family that has shown to act in a fresh state, her half-sister, Skittle (Pins), has also impressed winning on slow footing amongst five wins to date.

4:26pm R7 2 Rapid Gain (4 g Flying Spur - Occasional Gain) - Opie Bosson; led up when finishing second fresh-up on July 31 in the Maiden 1200 metres on Slow8 footing at Rotorua. Up to 1300 metres, he will be patiently ridden from a wide barrier and look to get home strongly. He is a half-brother to Blue Diamond (Gr. 1, 1200m) winner True Jewels (Brief Truce), a race in which his brother, Wager, finished second. Wager also won the Stan Fox Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m), Sir Byrne Hart (Gr. 2, 1400m) and finished runner-up in the Sires' Produce (Gr. 1, 1400m), Champagne Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m), Tea Rose Stakes (Gr. 2, 1500m), and the Furious Stakes (Gr. 3, 1400m).
