Te Akau Matamata Midweek Preview

Te Akau Racing has 17 horses entered on Wednesday 25 January at Matamata.

Weather: fine, track: Soft6, rail: out 10 metres. Drizzling.

12:43 p.m. R1 18 Patriarca (4 m Savabeel - Baby Shacks) - Craig Zackey; she made ground from a distant last on Heavy10 in the Maiden 1400 metres on 13 January at Tauranga. She should appreciate stepping up in the $14,000 Maiden 1600 metres and has the Karaka 2YO Million rider aboard.

2:36 p.m. R4 11 Redsheis (3 f Burgundy - Show No Emotion) - Jake Bayliss; she did everything right finishing third in her first two starts here, before finding the Heavy10 too testing in the Maiden 1400 metres on 13 January at Tauranga. She is ideally drawn (3) in the $14,000 Maiden 1400 metres and should coincide with another good showing on improved footing.

3:11 p.m. R5 1 Cyclonic King (2 g Exceed and Excel - Lady Krovanh) - Opie Bosson; he worked to the lead and kept giving for second in the Maiden 2YO 1000 metres here on 3 January. Contesting the $14,000 NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden 2YO 1200 metres, with the blinkers on, he rates a top three chance with decent trip from barrier eight - the first of two juveniles in the event.

3:11 p.m. R5 9 Mazzucato (2 f Tivaci - Yellen) - Craig Grylls; she quickened appreciably once clear for second in a trial on 17 January at Tauranga, and debuts in the $14,000 NZB Insurance Pearl Series Maiden 2YO 1200 metres (eligible $13,000 bonus). She has the pedigree to appreciate further, but could sprint well fresh and she ideally drawn (2) to make an impact.

3:45 p.m. R6 1 Espionage (4 g Savabeel - Bayrock) - Opie Bosson; he resumed with a strong run for second in the $14,000 Maiden 1200 metres on 2 January at Tauranga, and contests the corresponding event. Placed twice on his home course, he shapes to race well if he emulates his first-up effort - one of a stable duo lining up in this race.

3:45 p.m. R6 11 Sorcha (3 f Burgundy - Niamh Elizabeth) - Hakim Kamaruddin (a1); she worked hard to range outside the leader and did well holding her spot for second to stable-mate Aliminette (Burgundy) for a Te Akau trifecta in the Maiden 3YO 1200 metres here on 3 January. From barrier five, she has top three prospects in the $14,000 Maiden 1200 metres.

4:20 p.m. R7 5 Felicienne (4 m Savabeel - Flavigny) - Opie Bosson; she did well for third on unsuitable Heavy8 footing in the Rating 65 1400 metres on 13 January at Tauranga, and contests the $14,000 Rating 65 1400 metres. Prior to that, she ran the fastest last 600m on the day, possesses a good course/distance record and is a top three prospect - the first of two for the stable in this.

4:20 p.m. R7 14 Florencenightngale (4 m Rip Van Winkle - Reigning Dynasty) - Craig Grylls; she remained midfield in the Rating 65 1300 metres on 30 December at Taupo, and also contests the $14,000 Rating 65 1400 metres. She was good winning on debut, and with the blinkers on, she receives her opportunity to improve further from barrier four.

4:55 p.m. R8 1 Mohawk Brave (4 g Extreme Choice - Ben's Duchess) - Opie Bosson; he continued his good form with a notable fourth in the Rating 75 1500 metres on 8 January at Pukekohe, and contests the $14,000 Rating 75 1400 metres. He carries the top weight 59kg, but has the blinkers on and rates a top three chance from barrier two.

4:55 p.m. R8 2 Lightning Field (6 g Deep Field - Claudine) - Joe Kamaruddin (a1); he never let down as expected in the Rating 75 1200 metres on 30 December at Taupo, and contests the $14,000 Rating 75 1400 metres. The winner of four, he is a competitive galloper, and appears capable of an improved performance on his home track.

4:55 p.m. R8 4 Zeitaku (4 g Savabeel - Miss Opulence) - Hakim Kamaruddin (a1); he ran the fastest last 600m (34.1) on the day for a fresh-up fifth in the Rating 75 1200 metres on 30 December at Taupo, and also contests the $14,000 Rating 75 1400 metres. He has the credentials and form to race well but will require luck from his wide draw (13).

4:55 p.m. R8 6 Cote de Beaune (4 g Burgundy - Lucrative) - Craig Grylls; he got back last and made ground in the Rating 75 1400 metres on 1 January at Te Rapa, and likewise contests the $14,000 Rating 75 1400 metres. He has the ability and is capable of much improved performance from barrier one.

5:30 p.m. R9 9 Avondalay (3 f Redoute's Choice - Miss Maren) - Joe Kamaruddin (a1); she ran on nicely for third on slow ground when resuming in the Rating 65 1400 metres here on 23 December and contests the $14,000 Rating 65 1600 metres. She was a course/distance winner in May and her handy barrier (2) ensures a favourable trip.

5:30 p.m. R9 11 It's Business Time (4 m Turn Me Loose - Risque Business) - Opie Bosson; she scored stylishly in the Maiden 1600 metres here on 3 January and also contests the $14,000 Rating 65 1600 metres. She brings the right form to handle this rise in grade, but she requires luck from her wide draw (11).

5:30 p.m. R9 13 Family Ties (3 f Contributer - Glamazon) - Hakim Kamaruddin (a1); she finished back in the Royal Stakes (Gr. 2, 2000m) on 1 January at Te Rapa, but drops back in class for the $14,000 Rating 65 1600 metres. The blinkers are on, and she has the ability to improve sharply with a decent trip in transit from her awkward barrier nine.

6:05 p.m. R10 13 Safura (3 f Almanzor - Corsage) - Craig Zackey; she stretched out nicely for second in the Maiden 1600 metres here on 23 December before posting a big effort for third in the Royal Stakes (Gr. 2, 2000m) on 1 January at Te Rapa. She warrants favouritism in the $14,000 Maiden 2000 metres.

6:41 p.m. R11 14 Mehzebeen (3 f Almanzor - Salkantay) - Joe Kamaruddin (a1); she got back clear last before running the fastest last 600m (35.7) in the Maiden 1800 metres on 30 December at Taupo, and contests the $14,000 Maiden 2000 metres. Drawn the ace, she rallied well for fifth here on debut and stepping up in trip should suit her.
