Support Iona and Help Make a Difference for Animals in Need
14 June, 2026
The Te Akau family is built on a love of animals, and today we'd love to ask for your support for a cause that is incredibly close to Karyn Fenton-Ellis' heart.
Karyn's much-loved poodle, Iona, is currently competing in the SPCA Pets of the Year competition, helping raise funds for the outstanding work the SPCA does for vulnerable animals throughout New Zealand.
Iona's story is a special one.
Originally bred through the NZ Guide Dogs programme, Iona showed exceptional intelligence from an early age. However, despite the incredible efforts of her puppy walkers, she struggled with anxiety and found city life overwhelming. While that meant she wasn't destined for a Guide Dog harness, it led her exactly where she was meant to be - to her forever home with Karyn and David.
Since arriving at their farm, Iona has flourished.
Whether she's chasing birds and butterflies, keeping a watchful eye on the family's rescue cats, spinning in circles with excitement, or racing across paddocks with the enthusiasm of a champion racehorse, Iona embraces every day with boundless joy.
The SPCA plays a vital role in giving animals the opportunity to find their own happy endings. Karyn, her mother, and daughters have all volunteered and supported animal welfare causes over the years, sharing a belief that every animal deserves care, compassion, and a voice.
If you'd like to support Karyn, Iona, and the incredible work of the SPCA, we would be grateful for any donation, large or small.
Together, we can help provide shelter, care, and brighter futures for animals who need it most.
