Lord Cosmos Lauds It

Set a task, Lord Cosmos  (2 g Pierro - Cosmic Powers, by Not A Single Doubt) did it stylishly when winning $12,000 Monstavision Maiden 2YO 1100 metres on 22 December at New Plymouth.

Following a close second after leading on debut in a 2YO 1000 metres on 25 November at Otaki, Lord Cosmos was back and wide after drawing the outside (6). Turning for home, he was giving the leader Alabama Gold (Turn Me Loose) six lengths, and the job appeared somewhat forlorn. However he powered up with raking strides to reel in a wavering leader near the line.

His last 100m was particularly encouraging under rider Michael McNab, who also rode him on debut, exuding attributes that should only advance with experience.

On Dead4 footing, Lord Cosmos ran 1100 metres in 1:05.2 and returned $1.80 & $1.30 on NZ TAB tote.

“He was a long way off them and that was a really good win,” said trainer Jamie Richards, registering his fourth juvenile success for the season and the second in a week after Fellini (Belardo) scored on Monday at Pukekohe.

“It was a chequered run, three deep without cover in a muddling affair, so I thought it was an impressive performance. Admittedly the horse in front did come to the end of it over the last 50 yards, but he showed plenty of determination and fight to get up and win.

“He'll have enough money in the bank heading into the Karaka Million (22 Jan.). We could give him a look around Ellerslie in the two-year-old race on the ninth (Jan.), or go straight into it. We'll be guided by how he comes through the race today.

“Certainly we are very happy with the way he won, and he's a horse that improved with a little break in the paddock and then three weeks into his next run. It worked out ideally, and it was a good effort by everyone at the Colt Barn to have him present in such good shape.”

Owned by Te Akau Galactic Racing Partnership (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM), Lord Cosmos was purchased by David Ellis CNZM for $190,000 at 2021 Karaka Book 1 Sale, from the draft of Hallmark Stud, having originally been consigned by Newgate Stud Farm at Magic Millions 2020 National Weanling Sale.

By Pierro (Lonhro): Champion First, Second, and Third Season Sire in Australia, he is from a Not A Single Doubt (Redoute's Choice) mare that won as a two-year-old.

At the time of purchase, Ellis made comments that are coming to fruition: “He's a lovely colt, out of Cosmic Powers, a young Not A Single Doubt mare, that was a winner as a two-year-old over 1000 metres.

“We think he's a real Karaka Million type horse with a lot of Not A Single Doubt about him, which is the reason I bought him.

“He's a nice type, walks well, is correct and he looks to be a natural runner with the scope to train on as a three-year-old and upwards.”

Lord Cosmos was strapped by Reece Trumper.
