TROBRIAND

Trobriand commenced his 2YO career with a bang - winning easily on debut in October 2022.  He showed his growing confidence and obvious ability when coming out to claim his second win from as many starts at Te Rapa in December 2022 on Waikato Cup Day.

Looking to maintain his unbeaten record, and secure his spot in the 2023 Karaka 2YO Million, he returned to Te Rapa on New Year's Day 2023 to contest the $140,000 Group 2 Carlaw Park Eclipse Stakes 2YO SW 1200m.

Despite his wide draw, Te Akau stable rider Opie Bosson worked him over, positioned him in second place at the 800m, and he took the lead at the 150m point to become a decisive winner.

Sent out favourite for the Karaka 2YO Million over 1200m, likely due to his form combined with him being the chosen mount of stable rider Opie Bosson, Trobriand ran in to all sorts of trouble.  He was badly hampered at the 800m point and had to be firmly restrained off heels, and then was hampered again at the 450m mark when trying to secure clear running. Under the circumstances, he did well to finish third to stablemate Tokyo Tycoon.

Towards the end of February, Trobriand was again thwarted by Tokyo Tycoon in his quest for further Group honours.  In the hands of Opie Bosson he was runner up to his stablemate in the $85,000 Group 3 Fairview Matamata Slipper for 2YO C&G over 1200m.

His final 2YO start came on 1 April 2023 in the $350,000 Group 1 Courtesy Ford Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes 2YO SW 1400m - he disputed the pace to the home turn but was only able to manage fourth place due to the off track conditions, as reported by stable rider Opie Bosson.

Trobriand returned to the track as a 3YO to contest the $100,000 Group 3 Cambridge Stud Northland Breeders' Stakes 3YO SW 1200m.  Again with Bosson in the saddle, he found plenty of fight to claim third place.  After trialling at Taupo in September 2023, he transferred to Te Akau's southern base in Christchurch to prepare for a Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas' tilt.

Despite drawing a wide gate, he showed courage when claiming the $40,000 Guineas' trial 3YO SW 1400m at Riccarton on 30 September 2023 with Te Akau apprentice Niranjan Parmar in the saddle.

Further valuable black type for the colt was secured when he was runner up in the $100,000 Group 3 War Decree Stakes 3YO SW 1600m at Riccarton on 28 October 2023 with Sam Weatherley engaged.

A colt by Kermadec, Trobriand was purchased by David Ellis CNZM for $260,000 from the Karaka Yearling Sale Book 1.  He is raced by the Te Akau Island Paradise Racing Partnership (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM).

He has raced nine times for four wins and five placings with stakes' earnings of $275,815.
