SUMMER MONSOON

Originally purchased as a future breeding prospect, Summer Monsoon is a horse was subsequently gelded that has continued to improve as he has matured.

He showed early promise when, in October 2016, he finished second on debut as a 2YO to Dual Horse of the Year and 14 time Group 1 winner Melody Belle.  He went on to win his second start in a Premier 2YO event at Te Rapa on Waikato Cup Day in December that year.

Summer Monsoon was talented enough as a juvenile to record a stirring second to Australian Group 1 performer Summer Passage, only beaten half a length in the $50,000 Listed Reid & Harrison Matamata Slipper 1200m in February 2017 with stable rider Opie Bosson aboard.

Although out of the winner's circle until August 2018, that soon changed when the son of Stratum was sent south by the team to prepare for a Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas' assault. Stepping out for the first time in the south, he was a convincing winner at Ashburton.  On a Heavy10 track, he made it look easy with Shafiq Rusof aboard, cruising home to win by 4.3 lengths in a R65 over 1250m.

This was to be the first of a number of visits south at that time of the year - and the first of a great South Island strike rate in the lead up to, and including, NZ Cup Week.

The patience of his owners was finally again rewarded over a year later when on 3 November 2019 he posted a big finish in the hands of Michael McNab to notch up career win three in a R64 1400m event - you guessed it, at the traditional lead up Motukarara meeting in Canterbury.  On Cup Day on 9 November he stepped up to R74 company and was only denied victory by a neck, showing again that his time south sees him 'grow another leg'.

Win No. 4 was delivered at his next start while still in the South, this time at Cromwell in a $25,000 R72 1400m with Jason Laking in the saddle on 1 December 2019.

Wind the clock forward 12 months to Cup Week - and with two second placings in the lead up in the south - it was Summer Monsoon's time to shine again on NZ Cup Day 14 November 2020.  He was a gritty winner of the $40,000 Wuhan Jockey Club Premier 1400m for Danielle Johnson - his fifth career win.

Fast forward to May 2021, Summer Monsoon was notching up career win six at Te Rapa, showing plenty of dash in the hands of Te Akau apprentice Joe Kamaruddin to easily claim a $32,500 Open Handicap 1400m, defeating Group 1 performer More Wonder and Money Trail.

Off to his beloved South Island in the lead up to NZ Cup Week 2021, he signalled he was poised to pounce when posting a brave second on his new southern campaign in September at Riccarton.  After beginning awkwardly, he was only beaten a long neck.

However the time to shine was beckoning again, and Summer Monsoon rattled home late in the hands of Kozzi Asano to win the $40,000 Ashburton Cup Open Handicap over 1400m on 16 October - win No.7.

With superb form heading into his 35th career start - he finally reaped the black type honours he so deserved. With the returned Opie Bosson engaged, fresh from his stirring win in the NZ 2000 Guineas on Noverre, this duo headed to the middle day of the Carnival on 10 November 2021.  Result: what a sight!  victory in the $100,000 Group 3 Lindauer Stewards' Stakes Open Handicap 1200m.

His eighth career win saw him became the second oldest stakes' winning horse trained by Te Akau, a month shy of Chambord's record, set when he won the Levin Stakes.

Summer Monsoon was purchased by David Ellis CNZM for A$200,000 at the Sydney Easter Sale and is raced by the Te Akau 2016 Sydney No.1 Breeding Syndicate (Mgr: DC Ellis CNZM).  He has raced 36 times for eight wins and 13 placings, with career earnings standing at $205,503.
