SELF OBSESSION

Entrusted to Te Akau to train by respected international bloodstock expert David Price, this filly was also bred by him - holding special significance for David.

After trialling nicely in August, September, October and November 2021, this daughter of Shocking made her debut as a three year old on 3 November 2021.  Finishing third behind the well regarded Apostrophe, she showed that she had an exciting future.

This was confirmed at her second race day appearance on 10 December 2021 in a Maiden 3YO 1600m when, in the hands of Michael McNab, she cruised home to win by a big 3.5 length margin - in a stable quinella with Trieste.

Her big step up, and most challenging test in her short career, came on New Year's Day 2022 at Ellerslie in the $120,000 Group 2 Valachi Downs Royal Stakes over 2000m.  Again in the hands of Michael McNab, she showed the grit and determination she is made of by winning the event in a head bobber.

Proving that her Group win was no fluke, she then claimed the $110,000 Group 2 David and Karyn Ellis Fillies' Classic over 2000m, again ridden by McNab, at Te Rapa on 12 February 2022.

Self Obsession made it a hat trick of Group 2 wins when stylishly winning the $110,000 Group 2 Little Avondale Lowland Stakes 3YOF SW 2100m on 3 March with Michael McNab again aboard.  That win propelled her to the top of the NZB Filly of the Year leaderboard as she headed towards the Group 1 NZ Oaks in March 2022 at Trentham.

In March, sent out favourite for the Group 1 NZ Oaks 2400m with Michael McNab in the saddle, Self Obsession had to settle for second to stablemate Belle En Rouge.  However the Shocking filly earned sufficient points to see her tie with Belle En Rouge for NZB Filly of the Year honours.

Self Obsession has raced six times for four wins and a second and third placing, earning $278,980 in stakes to date.
