PRISE DE FER

A talented son of Savabeel, Prise De Fer came of age in the 2019/20 season.

Patience with the horse delivered the rewards to his owners as he strung four wins together from October 2019 through to his $100,000 Group 2 Rich Hill Mile win on New Year's Day 2020.

Sent out the favourite, he claimed victory easily in the hands of Australian-based Kiwi rider Michael Dee.

The class act then continued on his winning way notching up his fifth consecutive victory when claiming the $80,000 Group 3 Taranaki Cup over 1800m - again with stable rider Opie Bosson in the saddle - on 1 February 2020.

Stepping up to elite company for the first time on 22 February 2020, Prise De Fer in the hands of Johnathan Parkes was a gallant runner up to stable mate Avantage in the $200,000 Group 1 Haunui Farm WFA Classic over 1600m.

The new 2020/21 season arrived and included:

Fresh up third place - $100,000 Group 2 Valachi Downs Foxbridge Plate 1200m at Te Rapa for Opie Bosson in September 2020

Runner up - $70,000 Group 3 J Swap Sprint 1400m at Te Rapa with Opie Bosson in December 2020

Runner up - $100,000 Group 2 City Of Palmerston North Awapuni Gold Cup 2000m in April 2021 for Opie Bosson at Awapuni

Third place - $110,000 Valachi Downs Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa in September 2021 for Troy Harris

Runner up - $220,000 Group 1 Windsor Park Plate 1600m at Hastings for Troy Harris

Third place - $250,000 Group 1 Livamol Classic WFA 2040m at Hastings for Troy Harris to stablemate Savy Yong Blonk

Prise De Fer continued his top level performances in the 2021/22 season recording placings in the Group 2 Foxbridge Plate (3rd) in September 2021 at Te Rapa; Group 1 Windsor Park Plate (runner up) in October 2021 at Hastings; Group 1 Livamol Classic (3rd) at Hastings also in October 2021, and the Group 1 Captain Cook Stakes (runner up) in December 2021 at Trentham.

His very good place form was rewarded with victory in the $100,000 Group 3 Coca Cola Canterbury Gold Cup WFA 2000m at Riccarton in April 2022 in the hands of Jason Laking - who had ridden stablemate to Group 1 Oaks' glory at Trentham in March 2022.

The 2022/23 season got underway with Prise De Fer's trademark aplomb - running third in the $300,000 Group 1 Arrowfield Stud Plate WFA 1600m at Matamata on 8 October 2022 (with Hastings being transferred) with Jason Laking again aboard.

On 12 November 2022 he was a gallant runner up in the $120,000 Group 2 Gartshore Tauranga Stakes AWA 1600m with Te Akau apprentice Joe Kamaruddin in the saddle.  Unfortunately he was three wide without cover for most of the race, but he never gave up and fought on gamely to be beaten less than half a length.

It was time for the winner's circle again however on 26 November at Te Rapa when Prise De Fer was sent out favourite for the $85,000 Group 3 Eagle Technology Stakes over 1600m with the SW+P conditions favouring his chances.  Despite being hampered at the start, and forced to settle back, South African rider Craig Zackey never batted an eyelid and the 7YO gelding stormed home down the outside for a well deserved victory - his 10th.

A stroke of training genius by trainer Mark Walker saw the decision to back Prise Fe Fer up seven days later at Trentham in search of his elusive Group 1.

Finally the day arrived on 3 December 2022 and the glory was to be his - with a spine-tingling run from the rear of the field on turning for home, Prise De Fer (ridden by Michael McNab) scorched down the outside and blew his opposition away - including race favourite, Champion 3YO Aegon.

On Boxing Day 2022, Prise De Fer contested the $320,0000 Group 1 Cambridge Stud Zabeel Classic over 2050m - the upper end of his distance preference - and was again gallant when finishing strongly for second in the hands of Opie Bosson.

Purchased by David Ellis CNZM from the Karaka Premier Sale for $100,000, Prise De Fer is raced by the Te Akau En Garde Syndicate (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM).

He has raced 40 times for 11 wins and 21 placings (nine times runner up), with stakes' earnings of $882,800.
